If Your Work Feels Meaningless, Try This

You’ve probably heard of the Eisenhower Matrix—a 2x2 grid that splits work into Urgent/Not and Important/Not. This is a helpful guide for task triage, deciding what is Urgent and Important then tackling those tasks first.

The problem is the Eisenhower Matrix isn’t great for understanding the direction your tasks were taking you in, or if they contributed to a larger project/goal. Personally, I started to get frustrated with this guide doing client work because everything felt (and usually was) urgent and important.

The more I did that work, the further I got from where my OMG Goals and WRAP Reviews kept telling me was important—making better YouTube videos and being a Creator, not just an Operator for other people.

See, Maintenance Work is what I need to do to keep the bills paid, clients and customers happy, and provide for my family. It’s good work for good money, but it’s not what I want to still be doing in 5-10 years.

Then I have Momentum Work. This includes consistent YouTube videos, figuring out Reels, writing newsletters, trying ads, and more. It’s not paying as well as client work (for now), but when I let it slide for too long I lose momentum.

There’s one risk and one big challenge with sticking to Maintenance Work—even if it’s comfortable and profitable.

The risk is that I’m staying busy and productive… but kinda stuck. The business grows a bit each year, but for it to really scale I need to hire and spend more time on business development. I did that 3 years ago and didn’t like it.

The challenge with Momentum Work is that it doesn’t demand anything from me. Maintenance Work does in the form of emails, Slack messages, launch dates, and deadlines. <itunes:summary>🎓 Neil Gaiman MasterClass Summary

Storytelling & Creative Writing

Neil Gaiman’s MasterClass is less about rigid writing formulas and more about imagination, courage, and finding your unique voice. While much of the course focuses on fiction and fantasy, the principles apply to all forms of storytelling.

🧠 Core Philosophy

According to Gaiman:

Writing isn’t about waiting for inspiration — it’s about sitting down and writing.

It’s not about following rules — it’s about discovering your voice.

It’s not about perfection — it’s about finishing.

One of his central ideas:

You don’t need permission to be a writer. You just start.

🔑 Key Lessons from the Course
1️⃣ Finding Your Voice

In the beginning, imitation is natural. Over time, through practice and experimentation, writers develop their own tone and perspective.

Originality emerges from:
Experience + Persistence + Creative Risk.

2️⃣ Where Stories Come From

Stories often begin with:

“What if?” questions

Myths and folklore

Personal observations

Gaiman emphasizes that generating ideas is a skill you can strengthen through curiosity and attention.

3️⃣ Worldbuilding

Especially in fantasy:

The world must feel internally consistent

Rules must be clear (even if not fully explained)

Over-explaining weakens immersion

He advises trusting the reader and leaving space for imagination.

4️⃣ Character Creation

Strong characters:

Have flaws

Want something deeply

Risk losing something important

Desire + Risk = Narrative momentum.

5️⃣ Plot & Structure

Gaiman does not rely on strict templates.

His approach:

Let the first draft flow freely

Structure can evolve during revision

Editing is where the real craft begins

6️⃣ Dealing with Writer’s Block

Writer’s block often comes from:

Fear

Perfectionism

Fear of judgment

The solution is simple but difficult: keep writing.

7️⃣ Revision & Editing

The first draft is for you.
The rewrite is for the reader.

Editing involves:

Cutting unnecessary scenes

Strengthening emotional beats

Refining pacing

8️⃣ Career Advice

Rejection is part of the process.

Create your own opportunities.

Keep producing work instead of waiting to be discovered.

Gaiman frames a writing career as a long-term creative journey, not a straight line.

🎯 Main Takeaway

You don’t need permission to create.

Rules are useful — but they can be broken.

Personal stories are the most powerful.

A finished imperfect story is better than a perfect unfinished one.</itunes:summary>

Most people think creativity is a gift. It's not. It's a skill, and AI is about to make it the most important one you have.

This episode is about the paradox at the center of every creative tool you're using right now. AI can make you more prolific than ever, but used without judgment, it can also make you invisible faster than anything else. I call it synthetic sameness, and it's already everywhere.

I've spent my career moving between mathematics, music, business, and AI, and the clearest lesson I've drawn from all of it is this: your originality and your taste are the two things no model can generate for you.

So in this video, I'll walk you through the EDGE framework, four principles for creating with AI without losing your edge.

You'll learn how to:

- Hold your work to a higher standard when AI will never run out of mediocre versions
- Move away from AI defaults and bring a point of view that actually stands out
- Ground everything you create in verifiable reality, not confident hallucination
- Make your work feel something, because that part still has to come from you

Along the way, I'll walk through Christopher Nolan flipping a real truck on LaSalle Street, a 95-minute AI film that generated 16,000 clips to find 253, a startup that made a $2,000 ad that reached 18 million people during the NBA Finals, and the AI band that hit Spotify's viral chart without a single human in the room.

AI can paint the candle flame. Only you can make it mean something.

Thank you, and I love you.</itunes:summary>

Using Obsidian for research is like learning to ride a bicycle; after a steep learning curve, you move at 4x the speed when it comes to literature reviews, academic writing, or memory. But it requires a mindset shift.

This video explains exactly what this is and how I built a "Wikipedia" for my research over 4 years, which enabled me to submit my PhD months ahead of time.

I am Ilya Shabanov, and I run EffortlessAcademic.com to help academics be more productive with digital note-taking, research tools and AI.
